Famous bettor Joseph Jagger and his amazing story

Short biography notes

Joseph Hobson Jagger was born in 1830 in Yorkshire in the village of Shelf. He worked as a mechanic in the cotton manufacturing industry of Yorkshire. Sometimes Joseph Jagger is associated with Mick Jagger from Rolling Stones. He is said to be his cousin.

Interest in mechanics

Joseph had a great interest in mechanics. In particular he was interested in the construction of roulette wheel. He examined the wheels of different roulette wheel manufacturers. He was sure that the roulette wheels are not perfect and are made with some kinds of bias. And the slightest declination could lead to great winnings.

1873

In 1873 Jagger hired six clerks in Monte Carlo. He asked them to record and analyze as many roulette wheel spins as possible. It was for the first time in that casino, so the clerks were allowed to do that kinds of records. One wheel was certainly biased. Nine numbers occurred more often than other - 7, 8, 9, 17, 19, 22, 28, 29).

1875

In 1875 Joseph Jagger started to gamble using the received information about the biased roulette wheel. During the first day of gambling he won more than 70 000$. The bias was not very clear and it could not guarantee the quick win. So the gambler needed to play "step by step". The second day of gambling he managed to win 300 000$.

Casino's actions

The casino workers were not sure that Jagger's strategy of playing was a legal one. And the thing they did was the changes of the roulette wheels' placement.

Loss

The next day after the changes Joseph Jagger lost a lot of money. He was not aware of the roulette wheels' arrangement. But soon he managed to find his biased wheel and began to win.

The bias

The lucky roulette wheel had some problems with frets. The casino finally noticed the declination and removed the bias.

Loss again

After the removing of the bias the lucky gambler was no more so lucky. He was losing heavily and eventually decided to take his winnings and quit the game. His winnings were about 5 million dollars.

Investments

The great gamblers did not want to return to the factory. He invested the winnings into the property.
